Twelve Days of Christmas Music that Doesn’t Suck – A Soalin’

Because really, a lot of it does.  I’m sorry, I really am, I’ve tried to be the Cheery Christmasy Type who whistles seasonal music because I love it, and not because it’s been permanently etched into my brain due to repetition, but most of that Baby Boomer jolt of Christmas music that has become canonical hasn’t aged terribly well, and after twenty two years, I’ve gotten kind of sick of it all. And those specials with the wood elves and stuff. I’m tired of those too. Humbug.

There is a lot of Christmas music that I do enjoy though, and I’d like to share it with you.  This one is a bit of a favorite of my family. We first discovered it in Deborah Turney Zagwyn’s book “The Winter Gift”. Since none of us were terribly good with reading sheet music, we would sing the song to a much brighter, cheery tune, but eventually a kindly music teacher set us straight. It’s pretty and haunting and hopeful, and it’s one that I find myself singing all year long.

Shiney Buttons!

😀 Aren’t they beautiful? I’m really pleased with how they turned out just black and white, I’m going to try the next batch with a spot colour in the background. Until I get a proper storefront up, I’ll just say that I’ll send three buttons to anyone who donates more than $8.00

A couple cool things popped up on the Internet today:

Power Nap is a comic about a person who has to sleep in a future where nobody else has to. It’s beautifully done, and has a kind of George Orwell vibe to it.

This Hot Air Balloon Sculpture was made from toothpicks and used tea bags. It’s also one of the less impressive sculptures the creator has made. His gallery is quite something.

Punk Rock Button Collection
(These aren’t mine…)

So Hey! My button machine came yesterday! If anyone wants custom 7/8″ hipster buttons done, send me the art and I’ll make as many as you need at $0.75 each (plus 7 dollars shipping). In the meantime, I need to put together some Cats in the Kitchen buttons. Is there anyone who would be interested? I’m going to pick five pictures of each character to make full-colour buttons of, then make them available for $2/pack of three. I guess what I’d like to know is, Would anybody be interested in that? And also, Do you have favorite pictures of the characters that you’d like to have in button form? have a flip through the archive and let me know

Hey! So, look to your right. I’ve put in some social networking buttons, in case you want to talk or stuff.

I’ve also added a donation button. Like a lot of webcomics I’m offering a wallpaper. But rather than the usual webcomic donation wallpaper, this one needs to be unlocked. Once donations reach $50, the wallpaper will be released for free to the entire community. Check the Achievements page to see what has been donated so far. I’ll keep putting up new wallpapers at increments of $50 or $25, depending on how this is received

Everything about this comic is an experiment, I need user feedback to make the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. So: Poll Time!

I don’t remember what I was actually looking for, but the other day I discovered grub-town, which has become one of my favorite food blogs now. This lady has an amazing eye for crisp, friendly pictures of nature and food, and the recipes are formatted playfully with a great sense of design. If I were to give you my top ten blogs, this would probably be among them.
